Steps to health

Steps to Health is Bexley’s exercise referral scheme which provides a safe, supervised and enjoyable introduction to physical activity within a controlled environment. The programme provides patients who are not regularly active or who may have health problems the opportunity to improve their health and well-being, regardless of age, ability or experience.

Any patient over the age of 16 years who is currently inactive who is contemplating becoming active to benefit their health and have one or more of the following conditions:

  • hypertension
  • obesity
  • Type I or type 2 diabetes
  • arthritis
  • depression or anxiety
  • orthopaedic or musculoskeletal problems
  • pulmonary disease
  • osteoporosis
  • fibromyalgia
  •  stroke
  •  stable angina
  •  peripheral vascular disease
     

Health professionals can refer patients to the 12-week Steps to Health programme. Exercise referral instructors conduct individual assessments and programmes for each person referred.

The current programme incorporates the following steps which includes the following:

  • welcome consultation
  • activity programme (induction)
  • programme follow up
  • programme follow up and goal setting
  • nutrition consultation
  • review
  • exit questionnaire.

Following the consultations and advice of the instructors, clients are integrated into the mainstream activities of the gym, on an unlimited basis for the duration of the programme. 

The programme cost £69.50 for 12 week programme or  a pay per session option is also available, subject to a £35 induction fee.
